Merchant Cabin is located on the west rim trail, approximately 1 mile from the landing. It is adjacent to the Merchandise Beach.
Sunset Cabin
Sunset Cabin is located on the west rim trail, approximately 3.6 miles from the landing. It is adjacent to Waterfall Beach.
Specifics on the Cabins
The cabins can comfortably accommodate up to four people (8 maximum). Cooking can be done on your own camp stove, the provided gas grill, or on fire grill outside. Plan to bring your own equipment. Including a camp stove, dishes, cooking utensils, toilet paper, lanterns, containers for carrying water, sleeping bags and pillows. The cabin has two bunk beds with 4 mattresses, a picnic table and a propane heater.
There are no modern bathroom facilities or electricity. A pit toilet is located just off the trail to the cabin. There are water spigots located at various sites on the island during the summer. The closest one to Merchant Cabin is 1 mile. See attached map. Water may also be filtered out of Lake Superior.
What you need to know
Refunds will NOT be issued for weather related issues once you have arrived in Munising. Know the forecast before you leave home. Refunds can be obtained in advance through the reservation system.
If you are both observant and lucky, you may be able to see a black bear during your visit. These are wild animals and are NOT to be harassed or fed. Once bears become accustomed to human food, they become a nuisance and a threat to your safety. Keep all food and scented items locked in the cabin, when not under your immediate supervision.
You will need a combination for the cabin, which is locked at all times. Combinations may be obtained through the reservation system. Please make sure you know the combination before traveling to Munising. If you cannot access the cabin, please call 906.202.1778.
Through the Recreation Enhancement Act, a daily entrance fee of $5.00/per person is charged per visit to the island. The fee is included in the passenger ferry fee or you can pay at the Interagency Visitor Center or at several locations on the island; season, family and boat entrance passes are also available.
Cell phone service is spotty on the island. There is a public phone located at the Visitor Contact Station for emergencies.
Special Regulations
Occupants are expected to clean the cabin and police the grounds, prior to departure.
Use of tents near the cabin site is prohibited.
Use of motorized vehicles off of the designated road system is prohibitied.
Check-in time is 1pm
Check-out time is 11am
Dogs are allowed, but must be leashed and never left unattended.
Collect down and dead wood for outside fires.
Occupants will be billed for damage or extra clean-up costs.
